Bahamas Boosts Mobile Coverage During '13 CARIFTA Games

This past Easter weekend, in anticipation of the 2013 CARIFTA Games, Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC) made a strategic move by boosting its mobile data network in The Bahamas. The company made the decision based on an expected surge in usage during the region’s main athletics meetings which took place in the islands this past weekend.

The company’s local subsidiary, BTC needed to install a new mobile cell site in order to handle the increased usage volume at the country’s National Stadium on the island of New Providence. Adding to that, BTC also installed four more sites in the region to help share what they thought was substantially heavy mobile data traffic

BTC is relatively new to the data services market, launching a service called HSPA+ in January of 2012. Since then, they have seen a major spike in data traffic over their network, especially in the past six months. The company also reports that since the launch of the new network, BTC customers are making a staggering 500,000 calls per day, which are significant numbers for the islands.

According to Geoff Houston, CEO of BTC, “What we have seen is that the pent up demand for both voice and data in The Bahamas was extraordinary. These new cellular towers will provide even better data and voice services to our mobile customers.”

Movistar Venezuela Plans 500 Million Dollar Network Investment

Movistar Venezuela has announced plans to invest 2.3 billion bolívars (US$535 million) upgrading its network during 2012. In addition to deploying an additional 230 base stations, the company will upgrade a further 860 base stations to HSPA+ capability.

The company also confirmed that it has been granted an additional 20Mhz block of spectrum in the 1900Mhz band.

The company added though that it is still working with the regulator on finalising its LTE deployment options.

Digicel in the BVI has performed a EDGE network upgrade

LCC to Perform Network Tuning for Mexican Operator

LCC International says that it has been awarded a large 3G initial tuning project for an unnamed wireless operator in Mexico.

Under the contract, LCC Mexico will be providing 20 teams for six months to verify 1700+ network sites through site audits, site analysis, drive test and optimization activities to meet key performance indicators (KPI’s) requirements and ensure the network’s best initial performance before the 3G’s commercial network launches in the market.

LCC added that has been in operation in Mexico for more than 4 years.
