Bahamas Boosts Mobile Coverage During '13 CARIFTA Games

Carifta Games 2013This past Easter weekend, in anticipation of the 2013 CARIFTA Games, Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC) made a strategic move by boosting its mobile data network in The Bahamas. The company made the decision based on an expected surge in usage during the region’s main athletics meetings which took place in the islands this past weekend.

The company’s local subsidiary, BTC needed to install a new mobile cell site in order to handle the increased usage volume at the country’s National Stadium on the island of New Providence. Adding to that, BTC also installed four more sites in the region to help share what they thought was substantially heavy mobile data traffic

BTC is relatively new to the data services market, launching a service called HSPA+ in January of 2012. Since then, they have seen a major spike in data traffic over their network, especially in the past six months. The company also reports that since the launch of the new network, BTC customers are making a staggering 500,000 calls per day, which are significant numbers for the islands.

According to Geoff Houston, CEO of BTC,  “What we have seen is that the pent up demand for both voice and data in The Bahamas was extraordinary. These new cellular towers will provide even better data and voice services to our mobile customers.”

BTC Launches HSPA+ Upgrade in Bahamas

The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) has launched a HSPA+ upgrade on its network.

Geoff Houston, the Chief Executive of BTC, said: “Using 4G our customers can communicate, engage socially, handle business and manage many other aspects of life using mobile handsets. For both Bahamians, and the tourists on which this economy depends, this is another significant step forward in the modernisation of the telecommunications infrastructure for these islands.”

UK based Cable & Wireless Communications purchased a majority shareholding in BTC earlier this year from the Government of The Bahamas. C&W is currently introducing HSPA+ data services in a number of its Caribbean businesses.

Bahamas Claims a 4G Network

The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) has opened a new flagship retail store and switched on what it is calling a 4G network. However, the FAQ on their website admits that this is a HSPA+ upgrade, and download speeds are limited to 8Mbps.

The launch of upgrade follows a $43 million capital expenditure in the network and a $55 million investment in NGN, the platform which boosts all of the nation’s telecoms capabilities.

BTC’s CEO Geoff Houston said in a statement that the transition had caused some recent interruption in cell service, but said BTC had to convert to a totally new platform while trying to keep the old one alive. “For us, it was a little like performing open heart surgery while the patient was walking around.”

The Nassau store is the first of 50 planned for throughout the country with another opening scheduled for December 12 in Grand Bahama when the major population centres of that island will experience 4G. Complete penetration of high-speed mobile and internet service in the Family Islands is slated for mid-2012.

BTC in Bahamas bears a blow to Blackberry & EDGE

The Bahamas based BTC is to offer a $10 credit to all its mobile internet subscribers as compensation for a network outage that started last Thursday and wasn’t fixed until Sunday morning. The outage affected the EDGE network as well as BlackBerry users.
