Colombian operator Tigo has announced the launch of its 4G LTE network in capital city, Bogota and Medellin, Barranquilla and Bucaramanga.Several more cities should be added this month, with the rest of the departmental capitals and medium-sized cities joining by mid-2014 according to El Tiempo.

Tigo will offer a package that includes 6 GB, unlimited SMS and unlimited access to Tigo Music, for 69,000 Colombian Pesos. A data plan with 15 GB costs 109,900 Colombian Pesos.

Claro is also on the point of announcing the start of a commercial LTE service, while the other holders of 4G licences (DirecTV, ETB and Avantel) should launch their operations in 2014. Currently some 20 mobile phones compatible with the 4G network are available on the local market.

Claro, Vivo, Oi and TIM win 4G licences in Brazil

Vivo, Claro, TIM Brasil and Oi have been chosen to provide the 4G mobile internet service in Brazil. The companies submitted bids of BRL 1.05 billion, BRL 630.191 million, BRL 340 million and BRL 330.851 million respectively, winning the spectrum auction held on 12 June by the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel)

Frequencies in the 450 MHz band for rural mobile telephony were auctioned, too, and as there were no bids, the four operators that won the 4G auction will also be required to invest in that segment.

In the 4G auction notice, Anatel did not define what internet speeds operators must offer for the 2.5 GHz band service. For the 450 MHz band, the download speed must be at least 256 Kbps and the upload speed, 128 Kbps. In addition to the national and rural telephony lots, Anatel is also auctioning 268 lots of frequency bands for regional operations, and Sky Brasil won at least ten lots.

Bahamas Claims a 4G Network

The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) has opened a new flagship retail store and switched on what it is calling a 4G network. However, the FAQ on their website admits that this is a HSPA+ upgrade, and download speeds are limited to 8Mbps.

The launch of upgrade follows a $43 million capital expenditure in the network and a $55 million investment in NGN, the platform which boosts all of the nation’s telecoms capabilities.

BTC’s CEO Geoff Houston said in a statement that the transition had caused some recent interruption in cell service, but said BTC had to convert to a totally new platform while trying to keep the old one alive. “For us, it was a little like performing open heart surgery while the patient was walking around.”

The Nassau store is the first of 50 planned for throughout the country with another opening scheduled for December 12 in Grand Bahama when the major population centres of that island will experience 4G. Complete penetration of high-speed mobile and internet service in the Family Islands is slated for mid-2012.

Lime launches 4G services in Cayman Islands

LIME, the Caribbean business of Cable & Wireless Communications, has launched its 4G network in the Cayman Islands. The Cayman Islands upgrade is the first part of region-wide HSPA+ roll-out.

LIME‘s Cayman 4G network covers all three Cayman islands (Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac). Lime has also introduced new price plans in Cayman for its 4G services. The packages include voice minutes, SMS and mobile data access. Lime plans to launch 4G services across 12 other Caribbean markets over the next 18 months. Lime Barbados and the Bahamas Telecommunications Company will be the next CWC businesses to launch 4G services later this year.
