El Salvador’s Number portability tender attracts 24 bidders

A total of 24 firms have expressed interest in participating in the tender to select the administrator of El Salvador’s number portability system. The country’s Superintendency of Electricity and Telecommunications (Siget) confirmed that 14 of the interested firms are local while the rest are foreign companies. Interested firms had time until 22 December to acquired the tender documents. Siget said it expects mobile number portability to be officially launched in February 2015. Number portability in the country was approved through a decree in 2010 but was never implemented. El Salvador has four mobile operators: Tigo, Movistar, Claro and Digicel.
