America Movil sees net income jump 87% in Q4

Latin American mobile operator America Movil finished 2010 with 276.5 million mobile customers, up by 12.1 percent year-on-year. America Movil added 8.2 million mobile subscribers in the fourth quarter. Postpaid net additions, 1.9 million, were twice as many as those gained in the year-earlier quarter. Net additions for the twelve months of 2010 topped 24.1 million. In the fourth quarter, Brazil led the increase in customer numbers, with net additions of 2.9 million, followed by Mexico (1.7 million), Colombia (624,000), and Chile (486,000). For America Movil, which operates under the brand names Claro and Telcel, the fourth quarter subscriber gains more than tripled in Central America and more than doubled in Mexico from the year before. Quarterly revenues rose 6.0 percent year-on-year to MXN 162 billion, while net service revenues increased around 5.5 percent. EBITDA improved 4.8 percent to MXN 61.2 billion. EBITDA margin was almost flat at 37.8 percent versus 38.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2009, despite the fast pace of subscriber growth, the company said. Net income jumped by nearly 87 percent to MXN 24.2 billion. Net income reflects extraordinary non-cash charges for a net amount of MXN 3.9 billion. Capex for 2010 amounted to MXN 81.9 billion.
