The Union Temporal Fibra Optica Colombiana consortium comprising Mexico’s TV Azteca and Total Play has won the National Fibre Optic Project tender in Colombia.

Under the terms of the deal, the consortium will build and maintain a fibre optic network. The contract is worth around USD 670 million. Union Temporal Fibra Optica Colombiana will connect around 753 municipalities to the fibre-optic network, deploying over 15,000 km of fibre cable.

In the tender, Union Temporal Fibra Optica Colombiana competed against groups that included Telmex, ZTE and Telefonica. The network deployment will start in 2012 and is scheduled for completion in 2014.
