Alfa to acquire AT&T's 49% stake in Alestra

AT&T and Alfa have reached an agreement for Alfa to acquire AT&T’s 49 percent stake in Mexican fixed-line operator Alestra. Following the completion of the acquisition, Alfa will be the sole shareholder of Alestra.

The Mexican operator will continue to provide IT and telecoms services to a full set of enterprise clients such as the corporate enterprise market, public and institutional sectors and SMBs in Mexico. In parallel, AT&T plans to continue to offer a comprehensive suite of enterprise communications services to multinational enterprise customers through its subsidiary AT&T Global Network Services Mexico. The equity sale is scheduled for completion in the second quarter, subject to regulatory approvals from Mexican authorities. Financial details related to the transaction have not been disclosed.

Mexican operators set up LTE consortium

Mexican operator MVS Comunicaciones has set up a consortium with Intel, Clearwire and Alestra, the company which offers AT&T telecommunications services in Mexico. The partners are waiting for Mexico’s government to allow them to offer a wireless high-speed internet service after four years of negotiations, Bloomberg reports, citing Jose Antonio Abad, CEO of the consortium.

The group has switched to LTE technology for its plan from Wimax, the standard they planned to use when they announced their strategy in 2009, Abad said. The consortium plans a network investment of USD 400 million and could offer service in six months if the government allowed them to proceed, the executive added.
