America Movil picks Alcatel-Lucent for LTE deployment

America Movil has selected Alcatel-Lucent provide infrastructure for its LTE/4G network rollout in Latin America. The deployment will Clarostart with America Movil’s Claro unit commercially launching high-speed mobile broadband services to subscribers in Puerto Rico in the coming weeks. Claro’s service offering will use Alcatel-Lucent’s LTE equipment, including its LightRadio product portfolio.

Anatel approves 4G auction draft documents

The board of Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) approved the draft documents for the auction of radio frequencies in the bands 450 MHz and 2.5 GHz, intended for LTE services. The bidding will be held by 30 April 2012, according to Decree 7512 of 30 June 2011. Anatel’s proposal will remain in consultation for 30 days from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette, with public hearings in Brasilia and Sao Paulo.

According to the regulator, the winners should be committed to taking measures to expand the penetration of voice and data telecommunication services in rural and remote areas at affordable prices. They should also provide broadband internet free of charge to all rural public schools in the areas they serve. The goal is to provide every state capital and every city with more than 500,000 inhabitants with 4G mobile telephony by 2014, in time for the football World Cup tournament, which will take place in Brazil.

Antel launches LTE network with Alcatel-Lucent

Uruguayan state-owned fixed and mobile operator Antel, in partnership with Alcatel-Lucent, has commercially launched its LTE mobile network. The network has been designed and built based on Alcatel-Lucent’s LTE platform. Antel’s subscribers can now access HD video, high-speed mobile data, videoconferencing, online gaming and other applications.

Antel’s LTE services will initially be available in Montevideo and Punta del Este, to be gradually expanded across the country. For this project Alcatel-Lucent provided LTE base stations (eNodeBs), the IP wireless Evolved Packet Core, as well as operations and maintenance services. Antel will also be leveraging Alcatel-Lucent’s IP portfolio of products for backhaul of the mobile traffic.

Sky launches TD-LTE network in Brazil

Brazilian cable and satellite TV operator Sky has launched mobile broadband services using 4G technology. Sky has selected Nokia Siemens Networks as sole vendor for the launch. As part of the project, NSN has provided a complete TD-LTE network.

The Sky fixed wireless broadband services are currently available in Brasilia city using a Wi-Fi router, offering speeds of 2 or 4Mbps. Customers can buy the service bundled with TV from Sky or as a standalone package. The company plans to roll out services to new customers in other cities of Brazil, and other countries in Latin America, in the future. Under the three-year contract, Nokia Siemens Networks has provided the TD-LTE radio network based on its Flexi Multiradio Base Station.

The company has also provided its FlexiPacket Microwave transport platform and Evolved Packet Core (EPC), which is part of its Liquid Core architecture. In addition, NSN has provided its CPEi-lte 7212 wireless router built for indoor use that provides fixed wireless connectivity to TD-LTE services via WiFi or Ethernet. Nokia Siemens Networks has also provided its NetAct network management system to provide configuration, monitoring and network optimization.

Huawei Wins LTE Network Contract for UNE Colombia

Huawei says that it will deploy its first LTE network in South America  for UNE Colombia. Throughout this first stage of project, UNE will deploy the network in Bogota and Medellin. Also the entire core network will be geared with Huawei equipments.

Huawei will also provide USB modems and smartphones to the company.  Details about the contract financials and timeline for the deployment were not disclosed

Huawei and Ericsson Win Colombian LTE Network Contracts

Colombian mobile network, UNE says that it has awarded contracts to Huawei and Ericsson to deploy a LTE network.

Phase one of the network rollout was awarded to Huawei, and Ericsson will get phase two of the deployment.

According to a statement from the mobile network, the first phase will be for cities like Bogota, Medellin, Barranquilla and Cali. The network is expected to go live in the first quarter of 2012 in Medellín and Bogotá with the other cities later in the year.
