Telefonica plans e-book launch to compete with Amazon

Telefonica plans to set up a unit selling electronic books in partnership with German media corporation Bertelsmann and Spanish book publisher Grupo Planeta. The unit would compete with Amazon.com in Latin America, local newspaper Expansion reports, without citing sources.

Telefonica will supply the technology platform and likely take a 50 percent stake while Bertelsmann and Planeta, through their joint venture Circulo de Lectores, will supply the content and own the rest of the business, Bloomberg reports.

Nokia Siemens opens service delivery centre in Mexico

Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has inaugurated a centre in Mexico to deliver remote services to operators across Latin America and worldwide.

The service delivery centre (SDC) will provide network design and planning as well as optimization and assurance for both networks and the services running over them. The facility joins NSN’s existing global network of SDCs for optimizing networks remotely for operators. The company’s four other SDCs are operating from Chennai and Noida (India), Lisbon (Portugal), and Shanghai (China).

The Mexico SDC will provide network planning and optimization services (NPO) to operators in Latin America and eventually extend these capabilities to other regions. The global network of five SDCs supports multi-technology, multi-vendor networks for operators. These centres support radio (2G, 3G and 4G technologies), transport, core and IP networks, as well as an increasing range of services, applications and devices.

Telefonica builds R&D center in Mexico

Telefonica has built a technology centre in Mexico. Overall investments in the project amounted to EUR 22.51 million, El Economista reports.

Located in the Ixtlahuaca Technology Park, the facility aims to strengthen Telefonica’s telecommunications infrastructure and prepare for the deployment of new services for consumers. The project was developed in partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks.

MasterCard and Telefonica set up m-Payments Joint Venture in Brazil

MasterCard and Telefonica have created a joint venture to offer mobile financial services for the 65 million Vivo customers in Brazil.

The partners will develop a mobile wallet service, enabling consumers to make payments via their mobile phones as well as transfer funds, pay bills and make online purchases. The service allows operations between banked and unbanked consumers and fosters the acceptance of mobile payments at locations that traditionally have only accepted cash transactions, such as taxis and delivery services, as well as direct sales such as door-to-door transactions.

The new company will operate independently with each shareholder holding 50 percent of the equity. The joint venture will be presented to competent authorities for approval.

Huawei and Ericsson Win Colombian LTE Network Contracts

Colombian mobile network, UNE says that it has awarded contracts to Huawei and Ericsson to deploy a LTE network.

Phase one of the network rollout was awarded to Huawei, and Ericsson will get phase two of the deployment.

According to a statement from the mobile network, the first phase will be for cities like Bogota, Medellin, Barranquilla and Cali. The network is expected to go live in the first quarter of 2012 in Medellín and Bogotá with the other cities later in the year.

Qualcomm Announces Leadership Change in Latin America

Qualcomm today announced the appointment of Rafael Steinhauser as senior vice president and president of Qualcomm Latin America.

Steinhauser will be based in Sao Paulo, Brazil and will report to Jing Wang, executive vice president and president of Global Business Operations. Flavio Mansi, who joined Qualcomm in 2001 and has been senior vice president and president of Qualcomm Latin America for the past two years, will be transitioning to other opportunities within the Company.

“Latin America’s burgeoning 3G adoption presents significant business opportunities for Qualcomm and its partners in the ecosystem,” said Wang. “We are fortunate to have Rafael join our Latin America team. His track record of success and proven leadership enables us to embrace growing opportunities in Latin America.”
Steinhauser brings more than 25 years of sales and executive leadership experience in the high-tech and telecommunications industries to Qualcomm, having held executive-level positions at Acision and NextWave, where he was president of Latin America operations; and at Cisco and Nortel, where he was president of Brazil operations.
Additionally, from 1990 to 2000, Steinhauser was involved with Qualcomm in various capacities, including as head of mobile satellite services for Qualcomm partner Eutelsat in Europe, and then as director of Qualcomm South America and as vice president of Qualcomm Brazil.
